When you are either adding a new menu or editing an existing menu, you have the option to designate what type of menu you need it to be. In this article, we will review the different menu types, so that you can make the best selection when adding or editing your menus.

The menu types you can create include:

  • A Primary/Main Navigation Menu (sits on your front page)

  • Hero/Community Navigation Menu (serves as an inner menu on Community pages)

  • Footer Menu (sits at the bottom of your platform)

First, to view the different menu options, you will want to be sure that you are in the Customize > Menus section of your dashboard. From there, you can select a menu from the menus dropdown to edit its menu type. Once you have the menu selected for which you would like to designate a menu type, scroll to the bottom of the page to the 'Menu Settings' area:

Please note: by default there is no menu type that is selected. A menu type does not need to be selected for each menu, unless it is a scenario detailed below.

Now that you're in 'Menu Settings,' let's review the menu types!

Primary Navigation: Your primary navigation is the menu that will appear at the top of your platform. This menu appears on every page that a user navigates to and can be thought of as your 'main' menu. Only one menu can be designated as the Primary Navigation. You cannot have alternate Primary Navigations for different areas of your platform.

Top Ribbon Menu: A 'Top Ribbon Menu' will appear above the primary navigation. It is unlikely that you would need to use this menu option. If you are interested in using this option, after selecting 'Top Ribbon Menu' you will need to contact our Support Team using the embedded form at the bottom of this article to request that a widget is activated. Until that widget is activated, your 'Top Ribbon Menu' will not appear.

Hero Nav: Selecting the 'Hero Nav' checkbox means that that menu will appear on your front page, below the banner space. To learn how to build a customizable hero navigation menu that acts as anchor-links and / or appears on your communities, please visit this article.

Quick Links: A 'Quick Links' menu will appear above the primary navigation and to the left of your sign-in options as an expandable series of squares. This menu is best used to promote high-volume action items. This menu is best leveraged with the inclusion of icons in each menu item.
