When uploading a new student subscriber file, does uConnect overwrite existing user data?

How your uConnect platform handles overwriting subscriber data all depends on the upload action you choose and a few specific settings. uConnect is designed to give you control over whether you’re adding, updating, or removing subscriber information.

For manual subscriber list uploads, you’ll see these main options:

manual upload subscriber options in uConnect

1. Adding new subscribers

  • If you choose “New subscribers” (or “Add users”):

    • uConnect will create new subscribers for records that don’t already exist.

    • If your file includes subscribers that already exist, you’ll be prompted whether you also want to update existing subscribers.

    • If you choose to update, the fields you map (e.g., class year, major, Communities) will be updated for those existing records.

2. Updating existing subscribers

  • If you choose “Existing subscribers who you would like to update to have different preferences” (or “Update users”):

    • uConnect will update only the subscribers that already exist in your platform, based on the email (and SSO ID, if applicable).

    • The data in the mapped columns in your file will overwrite the corresponding fields for those subscribers.

    • During this step, you may see an option to either:

      • Maintain any preferences the subscriber has customized themselves, or

      • Replace their preferences with those in your file

    • Typically, we recommend maintaining subscriber-customized preferences, unless you have a specific reason to reset them.

3. Other update options (remove tags, unsubscribe, delete, bounce reset)

When you upload, you can also choose actions that target existing subscribers only, such as:

  • Remove tags – removes specific tags you include in the file.

  • Unsubscribe – unsubscribes listed subscribers from your emails.

  • Remove bounced flag – allows previously bounced emails to receive emails again.

  • Delete subscribers – removes them from your platform.

In each case, uConnect applies only the action you choose; it does not automatically overwrite unrelated fields.

4. Automated SIS / automated subscriber uploads

settings for automated subscriber uploads in uConnect

If you’re using an automated SIS or automated subscriber upload:

  • The SIS sync will overwrite certain fields based on the SIS file and your Bridge/automation settings.

    • Graduation date is always updated from SIS.

    • Email frequency and user type can be overwritten by SIS, depending on configuration.

    • Community and content preferences are added/updated, but user-customized tags are not removed by SIS.

If you’re not sure which fields in your setup are controlled by SIS vs. manual uploads, please reach out to our support team who can help provide more insight into your uConnect setup.
