How to Set Up Automated Subscriber Uploads (SIS)

Automated Subscriber Uploads allow your institution to securely sync subscriber data—such as students—from your SIS or other student information source directly into uConnect.

Once enabled, the system will automatically import new subscribers on a daily or weekly schedule, eliminating the need for manual uploads. This guide walks you through the full setup process, from enabling the feature to completing your data mapping.

Overview of the Setup Process

Setting up automated uploads includes four main steps:

  1. Start the Automated Subscriber Upload process in the uConnect dashboard.

  2. IT receives setup instructions and configures the automated file upload to your secure S3 bucket.

  3. Admins complete the automation settings once a file has been successfully uploaded.

  4. Map SIS file fields to uConnect fields and activate the ongoing sync.

You can continue using manual uploads at any time—starting this process does not disable that functionality.

Step 1: Begin the Automated Subscriber Upload Process

  1. Log into your uConnect dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Engage > Subscribers > Automated Subscriber Uploads.

  3. Select Begin Automatic Subscriber Uploads Process.

When you click this button:

  • A secure S3 bucket is automatically created for your data uploads.

  • You will receive an instructional email with a link to generate S3 access credentials.

  • You may forward this email to your IT team.

What the Email Includes

The email you receive contains:

  • Instructions for setting up your automated uploads

  • A recommended CSV template with required headers

  • A link to generate your S3 credentials (valid for 7 days)

  • Guidance for re-sending the email if needed

If the link expires, return to Engage > Subscribers > Automated Subscriber Uploads and select Resend Email.

Step 2: IT Configures the Automated File Upload

Your IT team will use the instructions and credentials from the email to automate the upload of your SIS file into the S3 bucket.

Important: Until a file is successfully uploaded to the S3 bucket, you will not be able to complete the remaining configuration steps in your dashboard. Depending on IT workflow, this may take anywhere from a day to a few weeks.

During this period, you can:

  • Resend instructions (if needed)

  • Regenerate credentials (if the link expires)

But no additional setup actions are required on your end.

Step 3: Complete the Automation Settings

Once the first file has been uploaded, your dashboard will display a notification and the configuration fields will become available.

You will now see the following settings:

Status

Toggle this to Active to enable ongoing automated syncs.

AWS S3 Bucket

The name of your S3 bucket. This is generated automatically and cannot be edited.

File Name

Select your SIS file from the dropdown. Most institutions will see only one file here.

Sync Frequency

Choose how often uConnect should import your data:

  • Weekly (recommended for most clients)

  • Daily

Auto Deprovision

If enabled, any subscriber not present in the latest SIS file will be automatically removed from your subscriber list.

Email Frequency

Choose whether subscribers should be automatically enrolled in a specific email cadence.

Actions

Optional tools to help manage your data:

  • Import Users – Run a sync immediately, outside of your scheduled cadence.

  • Download List – Download a report of the subscribers currently included in your SIS file.

  • View Log – View details of recent imports, including counts of added and skipped records.

Step 4: Map Your SIS File to uConnect Fields

Once you’ve selected your file, you will be prompted to map the columns in your SIS file to uConnect fields. You may map fields to:

  • First Name (required)

  • Last Name (required)

  • Email Address (required)

  • USER ID/SSO ID (required if SSO is enabled)

  • Graduation or class year (required for students; 4-digit year)

  • Stakeholder groups (required to identify the subscribers, i.e. undergraduate students)

  • Community Groups (optional; example if you wanted to assign students to career communities)

Only the mapping tabs relevant to your file will appear.

This mapping experience closely mirrors the existing manual subscriber upload workflow. Here is more guidance on how to format a SIS file and a sample template.

Error Handling

If any required fields are missing or unmapped:

  • You will see warnings or error messages

  • You can update your mapping at any time

Once all required mappings are complete and the Status toggle is set to Active, your automated SIS sync is live!
