What is AI Search and How it Works

AI Search is a significant upgrade to how students find career resources on your Virtual Career Center (VCC). If you've been using the platform for a while, you're familiar with the traditional keyword search bar — students typed a term, got a list of results, and hoped they used the right words. AI Search replaces that experience entirely with something smarter, faster, and far more helpful for students.

What AI Search Is

AI Search is a conversational discovery tool built directly into your VCC. Instead of only entering keywords and scanning a results list, students ask questions in plain, natural language — the same way they'd ask a colleague or advisor — and receive curated, relevant answers drawn entirely from your institution's published content.

Think of it as a knowledgeable, always-on concierge for your career center. It knows everything you've published, it's available 24 hours a day, and it responds to each student with personalized, relevant suggestions.


 

What AI Search Is Not

With so many AI tools in the news, it's natural for colleagues and students to have questions about what kind of AI this actually is. Here are the most important clarifications:

  • It is not ChatGPT or any general-purpose AI. AI Search does not have access to the open internet and cannot discuss topics outside your career center's content.
  • It is not connected to the web. Students will never receive information from external websites, social media, news sources, or unvetted third parties.
  • It is not a resume writer or career coach. It will not draft cover letters, rewrite resumes, or provide personalized career advice. It surfaces the resources your institution has already created to help students do those things.
  • It is not pulling data from other institutions. Every search is scoped entirely to your VCC content — students will never see resources from another school.

AI Search uses a technology called Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG. You don't need to know the technical details, but here's a helpful analogy:

The Smart Concierge Analogy

Imagine a staff member who has personally read every blog post, resource, event listing, and job posting on your VCC. When a student asks a question, this concierge doesn't just point to a shelf — they retrieve the most relevant resources and explain exactly where to find them, with a link to the original source.


That's what AI Search does, at scale, for every student, at any hour.

In practice, here's what happens when a student submits a question:

  • The student types a question in natural language into the AI Search panel.
  • AI Search searches your VCC content for the most semantically relevant matches — meaning it understands what the student is asking, not just the specific words they used.
  • It retrieves the best-matching content and generates a helpful, plain-language response.
  • The response includes citations with direct links to the source content, so students always know exactly where the information came from.

Because AI Search only generates responses based on content it has actually retrieved from your VCC, it will not fabricate answers. If a student asks about something that doesn't exist in your platform, it tells them — and points them toward career services.


It's On Automatically

AI Search is enabled for all VCCs  — no configuration is required to activate it. When it goes live, the traditional keyword search bar will still remain in the top of your platform and AI Search will sit in the bottom right or left corner of your platform, depending on what you choose.

AI Search is built in-house by uConnect — not a third-party white-labeled product. Your institution's content is never mixed with or accessible by other institutions (tenant isolation). uConnect has a completed HECVAT available on request and is on track for SOC 2 compliance in 2027, backed by continuous security monitoring and rigorous governance practices.

Security and Privacy

AI Search is built in-house by uConnect — not a third-party white-labeled product. Your institution's content is never mixed with or accessible by other institutions (this is called tenant isolation). uConnect maintains SOC 2 compliance with continuous security monitoring and rigorous governance frameworks.
