How to Rename a Community Page Without Affecting Subscribers

Need to update the name of a community page? Good news — you can rename a community without losing any of the tag associations tied to your subscribers. This means no re-tagging required! The key is knowing whether or not to update the URL (slug) along with the name, and what to do in each case.

Before You Begin

Keep this important distinction in mind:

  • Updating the name only → Subscriber tags update automatically. ✅ No extra steps.
  • Updating the name AND the URL/slug → Subscriber tags still update automatically ✅, but you will need to refresh your navigation menu to fix any broken front-end links.

Steps: Renaming a Community (Name Only)

  1. From your admin dashboard, navigate to Manage Communities.
  2. Use the search bar on the right side to locate the community you want to rename.
  3. Click Quick Edit on the community.
  4. Update the Name field with the new name.
  5. Leave the URL/slug field unchanged.
  6. Click Update.

That's it! The new name will automatically apply to all subscribers who have that community tag associated with their account.

Steps: Renaming a Community (Name + URL/Slug)

If you also want to update the URL to match the new name:

  1. Follow steps 1–4 above.
  2. Update both the Name and the URL/slug fields.
  3. Scroll down and click Update.

⚠️ Note: Changing the URL will break any existing front-end navigation links pointing to that community page. Follow the steps below to fix this.

Fix the Navigation Menu After a URL Change
  1. Go to Customize Menus in your admin dashboard.
  2. Select your Primary Navigation Menu from the menu dropdown.
  3. Scroll down to find the menu item for the community you updated.
  4. You'll notice the menu item has already auto-updated in the back end — it just needs to be saved to push the change to the front end.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Navigate to your site's front end and verify the menu link now routes correctly.

Final Checklist

After renaming a community, review these areas to make sure everything is up to date:

  • Community name updated in Manage Communities
  • Subscriber tags confirmed (no re-tagging needed)
  • Navigation menu saved (only needed if URL was changed)
  • Community description updated to reflect the new name (easy to overlook!)
  • Any other locations where the community is linked reviewed and updated (if URL was changed)
