Track more data with Google Analytics access
TO access more data, you'll need access to Google Analytics, specifically GA4. We will need to send your data to a secondary property that needs to be created by you or a contact in marketing/IT at your institution that has access to a Google Account/Gmail email address (ie: gmail.com or your institutional email!). Here are instructions you or another contact at your institution can follow. You’ll need to create a new property in Google Analytics 4 ("Create a GA4 property"), then share the measurement ID with us.
The Analyze section of your uConnect platform surfaces a broad set of engagement data. For teams that need greater depth or custom reporting, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can be connected to your uConnect platform to extend that visibility. The steps below walk you through creating a GA4 property, sharing the Measurement ID with uConnect Support, and optionally setting up source tracking on widget buttons.
To do this, you'll need access to Google Analytics, specifically GA4.
To connect your data, you or a contact in your institution's marketing or IT department will need to create a secondary property in Google Analytics 4. This requires access to a Google Account (either a Gmail address or your institutional email address). Follow the steps below, or share them with the appropriate contact at your institution.
- Create a new property in Google Analytics 4 using Google's official setup instructions (linked above).
- Copy the Measurement ID generated at the final step (format:
G-#########). - Share that Measurement ID with uConnect via a Support Ticket (use the button below).
Here's a 5-minute video reviewing the process.
Once you get to the final step, you'll see a measurement ID (looks like G-#########) is generated. You can share that number with us, via a Support Ticket, and then we can sync the data from your Google Analytics 4 uConnect property to begin to appear in the Property that you've created.
After this is set-up, the data from your instance should start to appear in 24 hours or less. Note this data is not retroactive; it will only start tracking starting on the day you've setup the instance. If you're unfamiliar with Google Analytics, we definitely recommend taking their quick training and visiting their extensive collection of help articles and their community space!
Set up source tracking to track specific data:
Once your data is linked to your secondary Google Analytics 4 property, you can track widget button clicks by appending a source link tag (a UTM parameter) to each button's URL. Add ?utm_source=LOCATION to the end of the URL you want to track, replacing LOCATION with a descriptive label for where the widget appears.
For example,
Example: To track clicks to a Career Success Outcomes resource page from the homepage side widget, use the URL https://uconnect.university.edu/resources/career-success-outcomes/?utm_source=homepage_side_widget and assign it to the relevant widget button. For more detail on UTM parameters, see this Google Analytics article on URL campaign parameters.
After you've selected the new tags for the URLs in that widget, please submit a new widget support ticket with the URL and
Once you have your tagged URLs ready, complete the setup with these final steps:
- Submit a widget support ticket (use the button below) with the tagged URL. uConnect will update the URLs for all buttons in the associated widgets.
- Create a custom report in Google Analytics 4 to track button-click engagement. See this Google Analytics article on custom reports for step-by-step instructions.
