# Launch Best Practices: Setting Up Your uConnect Platform for Success

## This guide outlines essential best practices for launching a Virtual Career Center, focusing on intuitive platform design, effective content organization, and strategic tagging. It emphasizes prioritizing user experience through clear navigation and targeted engagement to ensure a successful, trackable launch.

Before you launch your Virtual Career Center, a little upfront planning goes a long way. This guide walks through the key areas to review — front page setup, communities, tagging, and stakeholder engagement — so your platform is intuitive, trackable, and ready to make a great first impression.

**What does this guide cover?** Use the sections below to configure your front page, structure communities and content categories, apply the Who/What/Where tagging framework, and build lasting stakeholder engagement from day one.

### 🏠 Front Page

Your front page is the first thing visitors see, so keep it clean and let your curated communities do the heavy lifting.

- **Keep intro text minimal.** Briefly describe the services and resources available, then direct visitors into your communities for the details.
- **Treat header bar buttons as prime real estate.** These travel with users across the entire platform — use them to link to your most frequently asked-about items or questions, cutting down on one-off emails to your team.
- **Use clear, simple language in your main navigation menu.** Vague or broad labels make it hard for users to find what they need, which leads to frustration and fewer repeat visits.
- **Not everything belongs in the main nav.** Lean on tagging instead — a well-tagged content management system acts as your virtual front door, surfacing resources in multiple relevant places without cluttering your top-level menu.
- **Refresh your banner monthly.** Use it to promote career fairs, workshops, seasonal themes, or new tools. Hyperlink it to the relevant event or resource so you can track engagement through analytics.

### 🗂️ Communities vs. Content Categories

Understanding the difference between these two structures is essential for keeping your platform organized and your analytics meaningful.

**What is the difference between a Community and a Content Category? A Community is a curated, topic-based hub that groups multiple content types (documents, videos, articles, experiential learning) for a specific audience or goal. A Content Category is a tag applied to individual resources that controls which community they appear in. Every resource needs a category tag; not every category needs its own community.**

**When to create a Community:** when you have multiple *types* of content on one topic. For example, a "Create a Resume" community might include:

- Documents (action verbs, templates)
- Videos (formatting tutorials)
- Articles (beating ATS screeners)
- Experiential learning (an online resume-building course)

**Avoid duplicating Communities and Content Categories.** Every resource still needs a content category tag — the category is what determines what shows up inside a given community. A few categories to watch for common overlap:

| **Category** | **Why It Matters** |
| --- | --- |
| **Faculty Resources** | Keeps faculty communities clean and focused; can be hidden from the signup screen so only relevant content appears |
| **Employer Resources** | Same principle as Faculty Resources — keeps employer content organized and easy to navigate; can also be hidden from the signup screen so students don't see employer-only materials |
| **Resume & Cover Letter Templates** | Since "Create a Resume/Cover Letter" is typically the #1 or #2 community platform-wide, this category lets visitors filter templates by career stage or industry |

 

**A quick tip on widgets:** a single widget can pull in multiple categories, but only one *content type* at a time. For example, Resources and Videos can't share a widget — but you could group "Cover Letter Templates" and "Resume Templates" together since they're the same content type.

### 🧭 Community Layout

Once inside a community, the same "less is more" principle applies.

- **Minimize intro text.** Let the curated content speak for itself.
- **Avoid direct hyperlinks to tools or PDFs.** uConnect analytics track engagement by content *type* — if you need to link out, attach the link to a content type (not a bare hyperlink) so it shows up in your Analyze dashboard.
- **Skip accordion blocks and lengthy descriptions.** Long intros can bury great content below the fold, leading visitors to miss it — and lowering overall engagement.
- **Keep widget and hero nav order consistent** across communities for a predictable, user-friendly experience.
- **Use real campus and student images.** This reinforces your branding and helps the platform feel authentically *yours*.

### 🏷️ Tagging: The Who, What, Where

Good tagging is the backbone of a discoverable platform. For every piece of content, ask:

1. **Who** — Which stakeholder is this content intended for?
2. **What** — What content category (or categories) does it belong to?
3. **Where** — Which community should it appear in?

**A word of caution on over-tagging:** uConnect's AI Search surfaces any published content regardless of tags, so everything remains discoverable. However, tags control how content appears *within communities*, so over-tagging degrades the curated experience even if search still works. If you find yourself adding tag after tag "just in case," that's a sign to stop. Over-tagged content dilutes your communities and makes it harder for visitors to find what they're actually looking for through organic search.

### 🤝 Engaging with Stakeholders

Getting people onto the platform is only half the job — here's how to build lasting engagement:

- **Start meetings with a login moment.** At the beginning of any student meeting, workshop, or presentation, have attendees pull out their devices, log in, and set their communication preferences *before* you dive into content.
- **Review analytics 30 days post-launch.** Check send times and content order for automated emails. Are open rates and engagement where you'd like them? If not, this is a great checkpoint to test adjustments.
- **Don't forget Faculty and Employers.** Send dedicated launch announcements to these groups too — the Virtual Career Center is a valuable resource for them, but only if they know it exists! 🎉
